the beach, and what used to be fine streets. All drugs, filth, down and out, a shock.
Then, lots of empty seeming condo complexes?
I am not speaking about bad pride but pride in your city, or state, or country, or anywhere at all.
It would be revealing to me to see the same area year after year, what happened.
I loved many US cities and towns because they used to value and take care of older, modest homes.
Not so, in BC, Canada. Torn down for high rises, expensive, nothing special.
I don't know if it's L or R, but I believe in taking care of private homes, can be very small, or some land. Fix, repair, paint.
There's so much GLASS high rise in Vancouver, the sunshine can't get through to the streets.
And parts of the main street is a dump. Nobody bothers?
But wear your mask!!

Did you go in 2008? Also, you do know that the population has increased and there is a housing crisis, and a crisis of public goods in general due to right-wing austerity, no?
@WilyRickWiles Yes, long ago. That and other 'reasons', assuming unavoidable. Same idea here. Nobody said boo to anything, that I heard.
I think of how Mexico city, big, bad place? It's beautiful, safe, and wonder how come? So many drug dealers, most are poor, but managing.
While there are likely slum areas in Mexico, it sure wasn't the main street.
A pro-China person compared US(I countered that), but they showed, I think, areas of Florida full of drug crazed individuals. Then, I saw lots of videos of 10 worst cities in US, and those were awful.
I see it crumbling.
@2FollowHim I think your experience had a lot to do with the concurrent bust of the housing bubble.
@2FollowHim I think Mexico City benefits from its massive population and layers of different economies that are fairly stable. The US only has one economy (two if you count the informal one) and is more dependent on imports of basic goods.
@2FollowHim But in general, I think you are fixated on the aesthetics of cleanliness, which has little to do with social reality.

@2FollowHim Our social problems have been with us for a long time, whether you could see them or whether they happened in the shadows. They are caused by capitalism and a bankrupt WASP culture.

Although not on your list, I don't see how Portland could possibly get any worse; but I'm certain they'll find a way.
They were one of the "best" cities in the country IMO. Then they gentrified-away almost literally every single minority household. And then they decide to get all "woke", lol.
Now they just seem to be a nest of white hipster collectivists destroying their own community as a sort of penance for their own inherent collective-racism, which they project onto "the Establishment" that they, themselves, "established" in the first place.
