A "spectrum" is linear. The color spectrum is linear and you never bend it into a circle because the color at one end is similar to the color at the other end. Would someone even place blue at one end of the color spectrum and navy blue at the other? No. Because they are not opposites they are similar.

Bending the political spectrum into a circle is merely an attempt to understand what the extreme right and the extreme left are doing at opposite ends of the spectrum when they are so similar. Hitler's manifesto is very similar to Marx's manifesto. We'll just bend the spectrum around and there - that explains it all. It doesn't explain where anything else belongs in the circle. Liberalism and Conservatism are supposed to be centrist but then that breaks down into economic and social factions where Liberals can be economically conservative but socially Liberals and Conservatives can be socially liberal but economically conservative. The difference blurs.

Conservatives would tend to be smaller government than Liberals. In the end that is the only difference between governments - how big and pervasive they are in the society. Thus the spectrum should go from no government at one end to total government at the other end.

The fact that socialists oppose each other is due to their dictatorial nature. Every socialist party wants governmental power for themselves alone - not because they are opposites. At a fledgling stage socialist parties will band together to gain power against other parties. Eventually one will destroy the other though and a single controlling party emerges.

Today, a state of confusion has erupted due to the fact that the left and right of the contemporary spectrum have been blurred by extremism. In the eyes of the left and right factions, all moderation has disappeared. The left are communist socialist totalitarians and the right are national socialist totalitarians. A big war is coming and the communists seem to have the edge. It may all go down in a whimper and we will finally get to try real socialism, on a global scale, at last. Anyway you look at it though, the approach won't be pretty for most of us.

This struggle between different socialist ideologies is a fabricated one. If communist socialism and national socialism had been placed at the same end of the political spectrum socialist insanity to gain total control, globally or nationally, would always remain a fringe movement, if it existed at all, and sanity would prevail. Only maniacs would think they could rule the world or totally engineer their nations. They would more easily be seen as the megalomaniacs they are.

Fascism is of the Left. Check out Giovanni Gentilé, the Marxist who tweaked the Socialist Ideology to make it nationalistic instead of internationalistic, and allowed capitalism so long as they were all under the thumb of the ruling party. In fact, the word Nazi is the abbreviation of the words "nationalist" and "socialist" in German. Technically speaking, the CCP has morphed itself into a fascist dictatorship.
