Help please. Social Justice invading my school system

I need help in fighting/addressing this issue at my work. I am a teacher in a very progressive county. We have a department of equity and inclusion. they sent out the attached memo. I am not very good with writing. Any insights or help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

TO: School Principals

FROM: SUBJECT: 2021-2022 STAFF AFFINITY GROUP
DATE: September 21, 2021

The purpose of this memo is to provide information about staff affinity groups for the 2021- 2022 school year. Along with Human Resources, the Office of Equity, Diversity and Opportunity (EDO) is tasked with improving the racial disproportionalityof student-to-teacher representation. This is an issue not just in- but throughout the nation.Studies have suggested that schools need to focus on the identification of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and implement programming to support their retention. One way studies have shown to assist with attracting more diverse candidates, reducing turnover, and increasing employee morale is the induction of staff affinity groups. Affinity groups can be used for networking, mentorships, and other opportunities for professional and personal development. Historically, affinity groups were centered on race or gender, but these groups are increasingly being created for those sharing other characteristics, such as age, activities of interest, veteran status, or other aspects of identity.

HCPS affinity groups are inclusive, allowing space for all staff to learn and grow, but the content of the meetings, as noted below, responds to the concerns of staff who share common characteristics. The overarching goal is to create a safe, trusted space for participants to show up as their full selves. Throughout the year, there will be intentionally designed opportunities for participants to collectively engage and learn from one another. The Office of EDO supports the following voluntary staff affinity groups:

• Allyship/Co-Conspirator Affinity Group
o recognize the positionality and roles of individuals for social change, personally and within the educational ecosystem;
o engage in discourse that drives actions that challenge inequities in education; and
o craft a safe space for community-building.

• Black Educator Collective (BEC)
o acknowledge a responsibility to highlight the positive contributions of Black educators in and outside of-for thestudents, staff, and families in our educational community;
o promote the advancement of Black educators' professional expertise throughout
-and thgereater educational community; and
o craft a safe space for community-building.

• People of Color Alliance
o (Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI)/Latine👩/Indigenous)
o recognize the positionality and roles of diverse staff to affirm and empower them within their spheres of influence; and
o craft a safe space for community-building.

• LGBTQ+ Affinity Group
o gain affirmation and empowerment from peers; and
o craft a safe space for community-building.

This school year poses new challenges, yet there is certainly the need for support. Due to limited availability in each group, interested staff members are advised to complete the­
Staff Affinity Group Interest Form 2021-2022 no later than October 8th. Please share with staff
that if there is insufficient space to serve everyone this year, there will be future opportunities.

See? What did I tell you? No one on here is actually involved in, and therefore has any idea, what actually goes on in schools. Unless what you wanted was a bit of moral support, rhetoric and the like don't provide practical, expert advice. One retired lawyer told me the other day that in the US, the education system is run by each state, not federally. i.e., there are 50 sets of laws to regulate how schools should be operated, what should be taught, etc. Schools hardly get inspected by independent bodies so they can do whatever they like until they are challenged. Is he right? Anyway, I hope you can get a lot of support from your colleagues, and from concerned parents, too, and I hope you will be successful with the grievance. Oh, of course, running your own school would be an option, too.

Yay! you win! Geez, how old are you? Would you have conceded with glee if I had recieved some thoughtful insights or help with this issue? I don't think so. But, congratulations you where kind of right. People offered solutions and support. And I thank all who replied, especially you Naomi. You had the best, greatest, super awesome answer to my silly attempt to ellicit help in a difficult situation.

@Naomi Starting a conversation with "See? What did I tell you?" in snarky at best. And then claiming some omnipotent knowledge that everyone on this site knows nothing about the education system in the states. I went with sarcasm because I thought that is where you were going. My best option would have been not to reply.

@FOTD13 I was telling you the fact. Do you really think that any expert who is active in their profession, doctors, lawyers, scientists, engineers, not to mention teachers, etc., come on a social media platform like this site to talk about their professions, let alone a serious matter like the one you posted here? They have confidentiality and non-disclosure obligations/agreements. These are in their job descriptions and contacts. Are you really a professional teacher? Now I seriously doubt that you are.
Incidentally, I was once part of the board of education in England, but it is irrelevant since I believe that the educational systems and environments are very different between England and America. See ya!

This isn’t at all unusual. Woke-progs have entrenched their beliefs across schools, institutions and corporations through diversity and equity committees. They see their role as enforcing compliance with their philosophy, censoring differing views, and creating and implementing programs that fit their narrative.

It’s all sounds reminiscent of the many party committees that ensured purity of word and deed in the old Soviet empire.

I have to add I detest the critical race term “BIPOC”, because it means anti-white, which, ironically, makes it racist.

It’s also darkly hilarious that the wokies are attempting to radicalize Asian communities by telling them they are “oppressed”. Academically, they outperform whites to the degree that universities have a higher bar for Asian admissions.

It’s really too late to change any of this, since woke activism is deeply embedded institutionally. Perhaps the only answer at this point is homeschooling or private school, neither of which offers much hope to a broad section of kids.

there is not much you can do as one teacher in a public school system. best thing you can do is to find other ways to use your teaching credentials. Private school, home schooling are the only two that come to mind.
Unfortunately salary and benefits in Public education by far surpass that of private school teaching and home schooling doesn't some with a salary unless you take in other peoples kids.

I know it is likely not possible but considered home schooling? Given a curriculum a large part of the process becomes: "Go away and learn kid." (Not as horrible as it sounds. Kids love learning if schools don't beat it out of them.)

Somehow, I don't think it is appropriate to bring this matter on a social media platform like this site, and I think you know it isn't right; you decided not to disclose the name of your school. It should be dealt with within the system to which you belong by following the correct grievance procedures. Perhaps, you can prepare an open letter to the board of education or the like to express your concerns about and your protest against your school policies and have it signed by those who share your views. How do I know that this is a genuine post, besides... sorry that I'm sceptical.

I get that. But I have to cover my ass. And what I am looking for is help on how to approach the issue within the county within the proper grievance procedures. I was just looking for help. I will adress the issue directly.

This seems like a very appropriate place to seek help. I had to redact. It is legit. Can you explain to me why you think this is not an appropriate place to post?

@FOTD13 You'll probably attract a lot of sympathy expressed in emotive language, but somehow I doubt that you'll get much professional advice from other professional teachers, education administrators and others who are directly involved in education; I don't think there are any on here. I may be wrong, though. I don't like the sound of the memo; I support the meritocratic ethos, but it is difficult to comment without the detailed context. If you have other teachers in your school who oppose to the memo, that's good news. If you belong to a union that supports your view, that's even better.
