As we watch the events unfolding in Afghanistan today, as republicans take every opportunity to get in front of the cameras to tell the country how the mess in Afghanistan is all the sitting administrations fault, let's not forget history. Let's not forget how the republican party's poster boy for what it claims are it's Christian, Constitutional values, Ronald Reagan, helped set the foundation for this now never ending modern war on islamic terrorism.

It's not like the principals which defined the Taliban back in the 1980s have changed so drastically. Hell those principals have hardly changed since the 1880s. Yet republicans are now trash talking, and doing their best to stir some irrational hysteria about the Taliban, about this group which the GOP poster boy claimed is the moral equivalent of the founding fathers of the United States.

Republicans had a fit about the pallet full of cash O-bomb-a sent to Iran. What say ye about the tons of ordinances the Reagan administration gave the saem islamic terrorists, as well as the boatloads of tax dollars which were donated to them by the Reagan administration? Just to be clear that is a rhetorical question. I have heard just about all the rationalizations justifying Reagan's actions while still condemning democrats for doing basically the exact same damn thing. I want to let you in on a little secret. It isnot just the democrats that want the citizenry of this country so violently divided, the republicans do their fair share of creating division with the same intent as the democrats. See the two parties are working together behind the scenes. Trey Gowdy in front of the cameras having a go at HIllary Clinton for being a liar, trashing emails etc. that is part of the dog and pony show, a Gladiator game kind of diversion to keep the people marching in the right direction, right over a cliff.

I have no issue with calling out Republican elected officials - especially this current lot - for their "do nothing" attitude. Any who calls themselves a Republican these days cannot be happy with their appalling lack of leadership and the preponderance of RINOs that happily work with the political establishment (or what Trump referred to as "the Swamp" ) that basically define the Party.

And if your response to that criticism is, "better them than the Democrats," then that speaks volumes about why you're really voting for them: because they aren't the Party you loathe. Frankly, I don't think either Party represents anyone not connected to Big Money; both sides worked together to push the one guy who tried to be a populist - Trump - out the door, and don't care what you think about that.

Afghanistan has been a disaster for the last 4 Presidents. Though, Bidet will be saddled with the bad taste - just fine by me - of his abandonment not only of those that were left behind to die, but of those left behind to suffer under the decades(?) of oppression and 12th century rule...

His actions essentially invalidated twenty years of our nation's time, attention, money, and lives. Sure, maybe the investment wasn't panning out the way we wanted to, but if NOTHING ELSE, maintaining a presence there keeps Afghanistan from returning to a terrorist haven and costs us little by comparison.

And now? We have nothing. All of those resources and human capital completely, utterly wasted on NOTHING.

The fall of the Soviet Union was at least in part do to the body bags coming back from Afghanistan. At least for a while the peaceful demise of the Soviet Union made the world a safer place.

Reagan was a pawn of the Neo Con fascists in his administration like Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld. Still he didn't go completely fascist. He restrained the complete corruption of freedom by the military industrial complex he helped build. Overall he was a good president although I couldn't bring myself to vote for him in his second campaign. It was clear by that time he had no experience that would allow him to understand the dangers of corporatism.

Shifting allegiances have always been part of Geopolitics. The U.S. was allied with Stalin in WWII. Seems unlikely that war could have been won without the Russians holding on. Most things in life are compromises. It's not so much the greater good but the lesser evil. I had never supported a presidential candidate before Trump and I don't like him. Hillary was the greater evil. life is about getting by as long as you can with the resources you have at hand but we all lose in the end, rich or poor, even nations have to be recreated periodically.

I think you meant W not Reagan. although they were around in the Reagan era, Rumsfeld and Cheney were not part of Reagan's administration. Cheney was a congressman and Rumsfeld did serve on a committee to establish relations in the middle east, particularly with Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

PNAC (The Project for a New American Century) was the neocon think tank that drove most of the W policies. I think Dick Cheney basically ran the Bush Administration. The affable "W" let him do so. Just like Biden is letting Obama run his administration by proxy.

@FrankZeleniuk

Both Rumsfeld and Cheney were active in the Reagan administration. Something that many people forget. Although they were not officially part of the administration it's clear that Reagan trusted and consulted with them.

"As a member of Ronald Reagan’s transition team, his power in Washington was once again evident. Reagan was sworn into office on January 20, 1981, and the next day G. D. Searle resubmitted their request for approval of aspartame as a food additive. By using his political prestige and experience shortly after the new President’s inauguration, Rumsfeld encouraged Reagan to replace the current FDA commissioner, Jere Goyan. Reagan, under the guidance of Rumsfeld, appointed Arthur Hull Hayes Jr. as the new FDA commissioner in April 1981. Hayes had no experience with food additives before accepting his job with the FDA. Despite his lack of qualifications, Hayes did have a relationship with Rumsfeld from working together on chemical warfare for the Department of Defense. Just two months after his appointment on July 15, 1981, Hayes disregarded the unanimous decision and recommendations of the Public Board of Inquiry by approving aspartame for use in dry foods.33 Hayes did admit that he wished more studies had been completed, but he did not think there was enough evidence present to delay the manufacturing of aspartame any longer. “I’m not prepared to say there is no risk from aspartame, but I thought it had been demonstrated that there was not a significant risk,” Hayes concluded.34 G. D. Searle immediately began marketing aspartame as a safe alternative to saccharin. Products containing aspartame did need to be clearly marked, but unlike saccharin, did not require a warning label stating possible side effects. Even with their recent success, G. D. Searle was not satisfied with the approval for dry use only and immediately began the process to obtain approval for use in carbonated beverages as well."

Corporatism is a necessary component of neo conservatism.

@wolfhnd I'm sure Rumsfeld and Cheney wanted Reagan's ear and unfortunately he, as you point out, did listen to some of their advice.

That aspartame thing started under the Carter administration. "Science" was already badmouthing saccharin and sucralose and it was banned. Ta Da! There was a viable alternative waiting in the wings! It's a sad state of affairs for Republicans when, after fast tracking and ensuring the approval of aspartame, a few of them left politics and became board members and big shareholders in Searle to help market the new sugar substitute. These guys were unscrupulous. Paved the way for the approval of aspertame and then enriched themselves by investing and managing its distribution. The bastards.

Today saccarin and sucralose are making a comeback and aspertame is in the doghouse. We now have natural sugar substitutes like stevia and monkfruit. Xylitol is acceptable and used alot.

The Dems since Woodrow Wilson have always tried to implemement socialist policies and programs. They have long despised the checks and balances of the Constitution and make end runs around it whenever no one's watching too closely.

But Lincoln, was probably the first to totally override the Constitution. The difference between his actions and those of the Dems is in intent. Lincoln wished to preserve the Union and the Dems totally want to "re-imagine" America as a socialist Utopia. As if that fantasy existed.
