WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR COUNTRY???!!!
HOW DID WE GET TO THIS POINT???!!!

I hear this a lot these days and, frankly, I’m getting real tired of all the bleating and whining. Suck it up people and take a hard look in the mirror, because that’s where you’ll find your answers.

Imagine, sixty years ago, a political organization that announced as its agenda the undermining of all the foundational pillars on which our society is built—commandeer our universities to turn them into Marxist indoctrination centers; transform our media into a massive propaganda machine; neuter the courts, rendering them incapable of providing the firewall meant to protect the constitution; eliminate law enforcement as a viable force that might stand at the gates and protection civilization from the barbarians clamoring to overrun us all; destroy the family; eliminate the ideal of a meritocracy; criminalize political opposition; rewrite or erase history; normalize crime. Surely they would have been met with scorn, ridicule and firm resistance. Perhaps even indictment and prosecution for treason.

Not really. Not at all, actually. Such an organization did exist, and it still does. I’m not talking about the Communist Party USA, or the Socialist Internationale, even though both were viable and active. I’m talking about the Democratic Party.

Keep in mind, all flavors of the left rest on the same philosophical bedrock: a belief that the “good of the people” (whatever that is) supersedes any notion of individual rights; and it is the obligation and the right of governments to implement any agenda in the furtherance of that ideal.

The radicals of that era were rightly marginalized because they kept preaching violent Revolution. But the Democrats were respectable. Part of the American fabric. They were serving the same pile of shit as the radicals, but it was broken down into small, bite-sized morsels that almost went down easily. And so we swallowed them. After all, a lot of our friends were Democrats. How bad could they be? And they didn’t really mean THAT, did they? THAT was just a bunch of hyperbole. They’d never go THAT far.

So we told ourselves, year after year. Meanwhile the bite-sized morsels kept getting larger, and though we really didn’t like eating shit, at some point, we’d given up the ability to stop. And the fringes where the radicals lurked kept getting closer… and closer… and closer.

And now we see that they really did mean THAT. They told us what they wanted to do. We watched them do it. And for reasons about which one can only speculate, there was only tepid resistance. Only two Republicans in a position to push back actually took action and pushed back. They tried to kill one and they tried to destroy the other. That they failed in both cases gives some measure of satisfaction. Reagan lived to win the Cold War. Trump stood, virtually alone, withstanding everything thrown at him and forced his enemies to reveal themselves in all their Communist glory. But there should have been more. But in case you’re still wondering, that’s what happened to our country. That’s how we got to this point.

What is stunning is how little we’ve learned. There’s no longer any confusion, people. They’re out in the open and have taken over whatever was left of the Democratic Party. Ok, so we let the last six decades slip through our fingers. Nothing to be done about that. It’s always easier to defend your territory than to have to take it back.

But what about the territory we still hold? Why aren’t we fighting for that? Instead, we have Sean Hannity, and most of the conservative media, still pointing out that GASP!!! There’s a double standard in the media. They’re SHOCKED to discover that the left is a hive of hypocrites. We still have Republicans deluding themselves that bipartisan legislation is possible, and that it would be a good thing if it happened.

What the fuck is it going to take? Wake up!

To Hillary we were “Deplorables.” Five years later, we’re “Domestic Terrorists.” We’re the “greatest threat to the country since the Civil War.” We laugh at the demented, moth-eaten fossil in the White House and tell ourselves we’re scoring points when we do. But those aren’t Joe’s words. Whoever put them in his mouth is deadly serious. They believe it.

Here’s the good news, such as it is. If they really had a lock on the kind of power that fills their wet dreams, we’d already be on our way to the camps. That’s what the crazies want. “But what about the moderates?” you say? The moderates are content to stand by and let the crazies send us all to camps. They all look at Cuba and slobber at the possibility of an unrestrained security apparatus like that. But even so, the Cuban people took to the streets, irony of ironies, waving the flag of a government that says they aren’t welcome.

What’s it going to take to drive us into the streets? And, by that time, Will it be too late to matter? What’s it going to take for us to say “Enough!” and mean it?
