Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.Every time I hear the phrase "white privilege" or an analogue, I keep thinking about my upbringing in poverty in Appalachia and an interview I watched many years ago of a young black lady from a wealthy family who was defending why she deserved to get the full-ride to an Ivy League that she received for being "disadvantaged."
I do not dispute that black people deal with some crazy shit in this world, although I will observe that a lot more of it is self-inflicted than anyone cares to admit. But if being born into wealth with black skin is being disadvantaged, I'd happily trade my white skin, my time living out of a car as a child, and regularly eating mayonnaise sandwiches, if she were so inclined to make the swap.
Which is to say that, no, I do not subscribe to the belief that the world is oriented to me. All the times I had doors slammed in my face BECAUSE I was white and male disabused me of any such notions decades ago. Do wealthy white people sit on the top of the totem pole? Probably, but contrary to Bernie Sanders, white people DO know what it's like to be poor.
