Everett Dirkson, Republican minority leader, led the movement to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rghts Act of 1965. A far larger percentage of Republican voted for these acts than Democrats, who filibustered the acts. Today's Republicans would do the same. The Republican Party was formed to abolish slavery. The Democratic Party was formed, under Jackson and his successors, to perpetuate it.
