I like your idea of just letting Trump and Biden ask each other questions. I do get why they want to be super cautious about Biden getting sick, but he's already doing stuff outside with a mask. Why not just have it outside, very far away from each other? Hazmat suits? Sealed booths? I mean, there are other ways to do this. Would extra precautions look silly? (More than Biden fumbling around with his mask while he's talking, or pulling down his mask to cough in his hand?)
I do think that we need more debates, at least for the undecideds. I'm unsure if debates can sway people one way or another at this point if they are already set on Trump or Biden.

It's canceled because Trump is contagious and wants to be in person to try and give it to Biden, and refused to do a virtual event because he doesn't want to follow the rules. Simple as that.
