Yes, by being obsesses with future individual rights, soft left unintentionally protects the hard left, until hard left takes over and comes for them too.

Remember how recently all those academics calling themselves liberals had to sign a petition point to dangers of cancel culture that came for them too. But they didn't do anything about it when it was trying to cancel others. Liberal philosophy suffers from problematic contradictions, that it refuses to acknowledges. And inevitably gets itself into trouble., and the rest of us too. Liberals who are conservatives, meaning they appreciate the foundation of Western civilization and how it was built, is a different story. But non conservative liberals are the real problem.

I keep posting this video, because its so insightful and well made arguments that show the contradistinction nature of liberalism. For inherent problems in Liberalism, to save me the writing about it, you can look at this Liberalism: the Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

The reality is almost the opposite of what most people imagine. Liberalism depends on capitalism to enforce individual responsibility. The fact that capitalism will always end up ran by globalists and corporatists is an issue that can only be addressed through collective responsibility. Ideally that responsibility comes from voting with your "dollars" but under the U.S. republican government it also must come from wise representatives.

We know from history that democracy is mob rule but now that it de facto exists it seems it would be impossible to reverse. Some people suggest that term limits would encourage wise representation and limit the influence of corporatist lobbyists and other special interest groups, even the tyranny of the majority. I'm not convinced. What the last four years should have made clear is that the entrenched bureaucracy and a multi tiered justice system makes wise representation almost impossible and that regardless of the individual representatives the system is corrupted by party loyalty.

Liberal democracy is not a perfect system but it has proven to be better than all the others tried. At the moment idealism on both the left and right are proving to be destructive forces. In this context liberalism can be associated with humility and an open mind in opposition to the tribalism and quest for ideological purity we are experiencing.
