If systemic racism did exist in an organization, how would we even go about proving it does?

Conversely, if systemic racism does not exist in an organization, how would you go about proving it doesn't?

The burden of proof is on the "does exist" camp - you can't prove a negative. They need to give concrete examples of systems that are racist and show how they are racist. Before that, though, there would need to be a discussion to find mutually agreeable definitions of terminology.

@TheMiddleWay Sorry, I missed the crucial word - I should have said you can't prove a UNIVERSAL negative. It would be impossible to prove that systemic racism never exists anywhere, just as it would be impossible to prove you never have a coin in your hand (assuming you have a hand that is capable of holding coins).

For this reason, the burden of proof is on those who claim systemic racism exists, regardless of who makes what claim.

@TheMiddleWay Right - so now you're presenting examples, which is what is required here. It is possible to show examples of things that exist. People can then have a debate as to whether that is a true example. The evidence needs to be brought by those who claim something exists rather than by those who claim it does not, as you have now done.

I personally agree that both of the examples you have provided are good evidence that systemic racism has existed towards various races or groups of races.

For me, Larry Elder did a really good job of proving it doesn't based on numbers in this interview with Dave Rubin, which btw is a really good interview and worth watching all of it.
When somebody tries to argue for systemic racism, it always seems to be on impressions or something they were told to think. I definitely felt that very same way before this interview, i had not looked anything up for myself and was just told many times I am oppressed because I'm female.
It didn't even occur to me to think I've never actually felt oppressed when I looked for work or submitted my work. Very lazy mentally.

I feel like if I wanted to prove it does exist, I would want to look for things in writing as irrefutable proof.
Like a company's policies specifically writing things in their documents. Something like "if a 'white' person and a 'black' person apply for this job, favor the 'white' one, tnx". Where, really, it has been consistent for many years now, you see fine prints like "this company or school does not discriminate based on color, religion, sexual orientation" type stuff.

@TheMiddleWay @Supervixen this study was done almost 20 years ago, but I think the framework and methods are effective. It would be interesting to see the same methods used to analyze current labor market trends. In case you don't want to read the whole study, the gist is that they applied for jobs with identical resumes, one set using white sounding names, and one set using African American sounding names. No difference in qualifications or skill. The resumes with white sounding names got somewhere around 50% more call backs than those with resumes containing African American sounding names. They explored many possible explanations for this outcome, even outside the context of racism, but I think it could be a useful tool in identifying potential practices that exist so that we can be more aware of their existence and create self checks to prevent them from leading to inequality.

@TheMiddleWay I forgot the link...

@TheMiddleWay That sounds like an illuminating study as well. I have seen a few in this context that seem to be consistent in their findings, albeit not necessarily consistent in their theories of possible root causes. I don't think we have enough info to get there, but I would love to see a meta analysis looking at these indicators across the board in the healthcare, employment, social services, education sectors and get a better vision of the bigger picture. It's easy to say it doesn't exist when it's not overt and in your face and everything else is subjective. I think there is enough evidence out there that shows it does exist, we just suck at being able to recognize it and rather than going against the grain to divert the vicious cycle in a better direction, we keep doing what we've always done and calling that good enough because it's better than where we started.

@Amzungu, @TheMiddleWay I feel like those studies talk more about an individual's own biases and preferences, rather than a systemic sort of issue.
I would like to see the same sort of study cross culturally and in different countries, because it's a very normal human thing to prefer certain humans over others based on a lot of variables.
Like one will always pick oneself, for example, over another person. Or one's own family, over other groups of people in lots of circumstances.

@TheMiddleWay In that case what about the 'race' of the individuals who were making the decisions on calling back for jobs or handing out loans?

To me, the "system" is the human system of having a preference for some people over others. No one is exempt of that bias.

"Systemic racism" is just marxist code for whites being the majority population. That does not mean they control the system and more than Indians controlled the system under British imperialism. What it should mean is institutional discrimination, but it doesn't mean that because that would call attention to the fact that whites are discriminated against.

Affirmative action is systemic racism. The fact that you can say anything bad about whites and only whites, including calling for their destruction in public, with no repercussions is systemic racism. The fact that whites are blamed in the media, in schools, in politics, in hollywood for all the worlds problems and condemned if they express even the slightest racial or historical pride is systemic racism. The fact that children and young adults are taught to believe that that whites are the originators and sole perpetrators of slavery, rather than being responsible for eradicating institutional slavery from the western world is systemic racism.

It's a nebuloua concept used to excuse the expansive discrimination against whites which currently exists in law, the media and politics because the people who control these systems despise white people.

@TheMiddleWay I'm not going to follow you on some rabbit trail where you attempt to justify the demonization of whites.

More whites fought and campaigned to end slavery than ever participated in it. You can't say the same for those demonizing them.

@TheMiddleWay

"I'll acknowledge this crumb if you let me ignore most of your comment and shift the conversation over to demonizing whites"

Not gonna happen, moshe. I know your tricks.

"Systemic Racism" is the proverbial red herring. (something, especially a clue, that is or is intended to be misleading or distracting)

It intentionally detracts from the fact that "racism" (mistrust or fear of "the other) is a human impulse. It is genetic in all humans. In other words Black people are as apt to hate, fear, distrust Whites as the other way around.
The expression "systemic racism" implies and is tacitly accepted to mean "White racism". I believe a good argument can be made that Black people are more apt or prone to act out in "racist" ways than White people are today.
Proving and disproving the existence of systemic racism is an impossibly silly task because the very thing is purely subjective.
This is one of the major problems with the PC mindset. People respond to a subjective complaint as though the complaint itself is "proof" of a problem - which may or may not exist objectively or in reality.
