Question

Something I would like to ask. Around here stores have notices at registers they would prefer you pay with debit, or credit cards, but if you pay cash they ask for exact change because their banks have been ordered not to issue coinage to push this stupid idea that there is now a shortage of coins in our society. My thought is this is the prelude to turning us into a cashless society, something they have been pushing for the past few years.

Question; Has anyone been refused a purchase because they wanted to pay with cash and did not have exact change?

Oddly enough I did not realize how much I did use the debit card until this nonsense got started and I started making the effort to pay with cash, unexact cash at that, just to see what would happen. So far I have not had any trouble, nor have I witnessed anyone being refused service for lack of exact change. I would really like to hear about as many other people's experiences as I can concerning this matter. Been refused service for not having exact change?

Technically, if you offer legal tender and it's refused for any reason (there are limits on specific denominations - ie. you can't pay your mortgage in pennies), the debt is considered paid in full.

At my employer we have change every day, and their bank has said nothing about shortages. Coinstar even opened up again. So, in my opinion, another farce.

Same here. I guess the US Mints have been shut down for the pandemic. Just a guess.

Here in the People's Republic of (southern) California, such signage is common. I have yet to be refused payment via legal tender or exact change issued, can't say I know anyone who has. Although like yourself I rarely carry actual money and pay via debit card.

Your suspicions on where this is leading I believe are correct though. Bad shit is coming, I'm not sure there is much that can be done to prepare for it in terms of circumventing or sidestepping.
