*But Against the Web ultimately pairs this deconstructive project with a prescriptive one — offering, as its subtitle suggests, a cosmopolitan socialist vision alongside its polemic against the intellectual shortcomings of the so-called IDW and its phony renegades. “What we need,” says Brooks in the book’s final chapter:
- is a cosmopolitan socialism premised on real material needs that expresses itself in criticism, art, movement building, and anything else that drives politics … following Gramsci, we need an integral approach that fuses universal desires, aspirations, and material concerns with a recognition that we do in fact live in a globalized, interconnected, and neoliberal world still defined by grotesque inequality, ecological crisis, and resurgent right wing authoritarianism.
So, yet again, a work of mostly deconstruction, followed up with call for utopian global universalism through cosmopolitan socialism...with no fucking idea how accomplish the dream barring revolutionary overturning of the status quo.
In the process, the author(s) seem to ignore the dozens and dozens of conversations among people actually trying to figure out how to navigate toward better institutions.

Hello govols. I learnt from Sir Roger Scruton that real conservatives are actually not afraid of changes. However, they are realists and pragmatists. They will conserve what is good for them, their loved ones and their community, and if there needs to be a change, and if it is in the interests of the common good, they will consider it carefully and make it happen as appropriate. It is not like they adhere to the status quo for the sake of adhering to it.
@Naomi, I think part of the problem is the failure of conservatives and liberals to understand that we're on an English philosophical journey toward the gradual implementation of institutional updates that are designed to uphold traditions of distributed sovereignty and prosperity to as wide a population as the existing social mores allow. Conservatives and liberals are "English" interactive explorations into how more and more individuals can be accepted into a tradition of self-sovereign households and communities.
I think the "progressive" American domestic product is tied more to Continental philosophy of general will and equity. To my mind, the Italian, German and French schools are the ones that American progressives have promoted, and conservatives and liberals are doing the English proposition. The form in actual power at the institutional levels is progressive, and by my way of thinking neither conservative nor liberal.
Hello. The article mentions only four members of IDW, Harris, Peterson, Rubin and Shapiro, while there are 20 of them.
How are the others perceived? Are they also defending the Status Quo?

Actually, I think we may be in the millions. There are a bunch on the right and a bunch on the left, for certain, and seem to be many in between. Where there isn't many is among the political managerial class...the holders of the various purse strings. The keepers of the Overton window.
The author of the book that this article reviews mentions more, including Bret Weinstein. I think the answer is yes, that he is painting the entire IDW with the same brush.
Kinda disappointing...
