It amazes me as blind person to hear the black community talk about how oppressed they are by society and they can't possibly overcome it. For one, the number of black success stories i have heard and seen should be a testament it isn’t so. But then on top of that i look at all of the things in place to help them overcome this issue and they still can’t and still blame the system. The blind and disabled community have their own things that help overcome some of the obstacles like the black community has to make up for some of the challenges in their way; scholarships specifically for their community and government aide (albeit government aide is for any impoverished sadly blacks just try to claim that as some sort of thing only they face though when they talk about it). But there are things only they get that the the disabled community doesn’t. They have affirmative action and diversity quotas. No one lowered the score criteria on standardized tests for me to get into college. I had to score just as high as everyone else. Sure i got extra time on tests and get help in school but blacks can get tutors to help them understand the material if they are having an issue. Like i am pretty sure the disabled community had just as many of the same literacy issues and low test scores as the black community. We also likely have just as much of an issue when it comes to college attendance and drop out rates. Only difference is the bar isn’t lowered for us. I also don’t see jobs bending over backwards to make sure they have disabled workers. Yes there are programs out their to specifically hire workers with disabilities but many times they are modified jobs and also have modified pay. It is not the same job. I have to fight just as hard if not harder for a job sometimes. Yes unlike a someone who is black i can sometimes fake my disability at an interview and on it does not show on my application like a “black” name does (whatever that is) but after i get the job i have to work twice as hard to keep it or in the event my disability is noticed at the interview then i have to fight twice as hard at the interview to show that despite my disability i can do the job. I wish i could blame the system that is set up to favor abled people the way black people can complain the system is stacked for whites. And to be fair i have done so a few times but then people have called me out on it and taught me i can do anything i set my mind to. Will it be harder, absolutely but not impossible. But why do i get told i can't blame the system but blacks can? We both have things in place to help bridge some of those obstacles whether real or perceived but only one of is still allowed to blame others when we are still not successful. If i am not successful given everything out there for me along with the challenges that still exist it’s my fault but for them it’s the system still holding them back and they can’t possibly do more themselves like i have had to.
