You just drew attention to one of the proverbial 500lb gorillas in the room.
It was the Spanish Conquistadors who colonized (invaded?) what is now South, Central America, Mexico, and pretty much everything from the North American Pacific Coast inward to the Rockies.
It is interesting also to note that the Spaniards ARE Western Europeans.
They are for the most part descendants of the Causations. The Spaniards mixed with the Natives in those lands and their progeny are now what we know as "Latino" and they speak Spanish.
