Cultural Marxism and the Lenses Through Which We Examine Reality and Experience

Marx is somehow a posthumous cult leader. He is the icon used to symbolize the modern version of the very human discomfort with the fact that life sucks, and suck even worse whenever you have it well enough to notice that it doesn't suck quite so much for some as for others. History, ancient history, and I'm sure even pre-history, is filled in and propelled by critics of the status quo. Marx was a critic, and like every critic he was onto something. Capital is advantageous to those of us who have it, and given the structures of culture into which each of us are thrown, a vast majority of humans will never hold a surplus of labor.

Marx was a materialist: a cause and effect guy. He didn't see history are a moral arc, but as the inevitable result of material causes, and given the facts of history he concluded that power advocates on behalf of those who have it. From that perspective, the powers and principalities active in the world today are the very ones that will remain in power tomorrow, barring some revolutionary action taken by--or on behalf of--the masses who are alienated from the principles that are formulating the future. Marx enunciated the idea the that we're all doomed to exist within the paradigm into which we're thrown at birth, unless or until we break from the paradigm. Marx wasn't terribly original with regard to philosophy, but merely molded a lens through which to look at his own age. A lens, once shaped and polished, can provide a way of looking at things no matter the age.

Cultural Marxism is a lens. The right AND the left use it to look at powers and principalities today. The left sees privilege and oppression and formulates theories that it designs to reveal such ideas to a broader audience. The right sees cancel culture through a very similar lens of oppression and privilege, in that it experiences a structural and maintained effort to suppress their criticisms of the current cultural institutions. Marx was looking at an economic stratification and observing that it was unhealthy for the masses; he predicted that only revolutionary forces could serve to recalibrate the economic structures of society, and such force would become inevitable.

He was wrong.

Cultural Marxism is the idea that STATUS, rather than wealth, is the division. Some of us have status and use it--intentionally or not--to build and maintain structures of dominance. The cultural powers and principalities today are revealed through a Marxist lens; who shapes history into the reality we experience? What is the cause and effect? The effect is the clown world we currently enjoy.

The cause?

Marx had a notion that economic inequality could only be solved through a working class revolution. Cultural Marxism is the idea of perpetual social revolution.

Marx did not understand capitalism. Capitalism is not so much an economic system as a management system. That he thought workers could or would manage effectively tells us of his disdain for management.
For more confirmation of his distaste for management you can look at how poorly he managed his own finances, his famiy and friendships, his work obligations and time, his sexual proclivities, and obligations in general. He was more artist than philosopher spinning his fantasies.

What capitalism does in theory is reward responsibility. The more voluntarily responsible an individual is the more obligations they will be given and the higher they will climb in the social hierarchy. Socialism in contrast has as it's key precept collective responsibility. In practice what that means is workers, under state coercion, pretend to work and the government pretends to pay them. Only someone as unaccustomed to responsibility as Marx would believe that without the reward for responsibility and punishment for failure that civilization was possible. What Marxism does is strip the individual of moral agency by denying freewill and making responsibility an undefinable collective trait.

When people say Marx was a materialist it would be more appropriate to say he was a determinist. He seems to have very little interest in producing anything of material value. Had he had any actual experience in production he would have realized that his theories were fantasy. had he had the power of insight that Dawson had he would have realized that civilization creates the conditions for group selection that is so unnatural for an ape. That so many of our scientists today have come to the same erroneous conclusion that determinism is incompatible with freewill is not surprising, it seems from confusion over the relationship between the material world and the cultural world. While freewill is obviously not absolute nor a physical property that exists like a rock or a gene it is a real cultural construct on which civilization depends.

A proper critique of capitalism would address how competency hierarchies tend to become tyrannies. Not undermine the foundation of civilization itself.
