I didn't know anything about B. T. Washington (I still don't know much about him), when I stumbled on the above quote. I became curious to know in what context he said this, and someone kindly directed me to this link.

With reference to the story of one doctor, I think I can understand what B. T. Washington meant, though it is a shame to see this way.

The hot mess is going to be hard to clean up given the state of "knowledge." I mean, we have differences over whether race is even a biological reality; race as a real thing but purely a social construct; race is a power dynamic; race is real and systemic; race is related to false consciousness; race can only be viewed from the perspective of the oppressed imaginary but very real and actually imposed by others upon victims of racism; we have to have a frank conversation about race; we're so tired of explaining the black experience to white allies who only ask to signal their virtue for their own benefit and profit... It just goes on and on and on from people who are bright enough that with a couple of years leaning a trade could probably own a business that employs dozens of whatever oppressed people they so dearly care about.

The shame is to NOT see it this way when it's clearly present. Much of race theory is mental masturbation among the talented tenth who have put their talent to waste doing theory rather than doing business within the communities for whom they profess to care and they presume to speak for.
