The power in the Vatican was very strong when it was quiet to the world. It is hard to be a good puppeteer when someone has pulled back the curtain.

A lot of weird, convoluted history behind the papacy. One of the odd little quirks is the smallest country in the world, the Knights of Malta, whose sovereign territory consists of one house in Rome.
