Statistics are great if done and used correctly, but if someone does not understand or have the necessary background in the subject matter, statistics become useless.
Another that screws up statistics is inaccurate data collecting or using out of date or bad data.

What matters is the skill of the mathematician.

Lesser mathematicians use statistics to hide their lesserness.

Statisticians forget that you need mathematics to guide your statistical analysis. Using statistical recipes alone gets you nowhere. You need a hypothesis. Mathematics power yields good hypotheses.

If there's a statistics fight, it should be converted to a mathematics fight. It should be a fight between mathematicians.

Not all mathematicians are created equal.

Once upon a time, there existed a great means of upward mobility called mathematics skill. The government held mathematics competitions for kids and gave money to the winners.

Democrat teachers want to pretend that mathematics skill doesn't exist.

This matter is personal. When I was a kid, I was motivated by mathematics competitions. Much of my success was made possible by mathematics competitions.

Every great physicist is also a great mathematician. Mathematics is one of the sources of physics power. Mathematics empowers all disciplines, even the humanities.

One of the most demanding statistics challenges that exists is analyzing data from the Large Hadron Collider. Measurements of particle properties are highly indirect and require fancy statitical techniques. Caltech has a graduate-level class in the physics department on statistics. It consists of demanding mathematics. Most statisticians do not possess the mathematical prerequisites to even take this class.

Analyzing LIGO data (gravitational waves) requires fancy statistical techniques, because the signals are very weak. They are able to measure the masses and angular momenta of the merging objects.

Statistics..., Ha!
Figures lie and liars figure.

Figures don't lie, It is about the person or entity who is tabulating the data into the statistics. When done correctly they are very useful and very helpful. Sports fans will tell you that.

Yes, sports statistics is a great thing to study. Strengthens your brain. It has the virtue that it has predictive power. You have to predict probabilities for upcoming games, and there is real money on the line. Objective reality is enforced.

I wrote an article on sports statistics. jaymaron.com/sports.html [jaymaron.com]

I consider sports statistics to be fascinating, and rich in mathematics. It's one of the prime focuses of my research.

An example is slugging number for baseball. It unifies home run prowess with on-base prowess. Slugging number was invented in 1954. Once it was invented, it was recognized that it was the path to further refinement. The metric that is used today is an extension of the slugging number, with extra terms added for polish. The art of polishing the slugging number is rich mathematics.

There are few baseball players that are successful at both batting and pitching. Babe Ruth is an example.

Shohei Ohtani is a major league baseball player that led the league in 2021 with 41 home runs and has a slugging number of .623. He is also a pitcher, with an ERA of 3.00 and a W-L record of 8-1.

One can construct a metric that combines batting and pitching prowess and compare Ohtani to Ruth.

Baseball batting is an individual sport and hence easy to quantify with statistics. Basketball is harder. A widely-used statistic is to compare how the team plays when the player is on the court vs. how they play when he's on the bench.

The role of statistics in hard science should not be underestimated. All knowledge in fact is approximate. The trick to being wise is knowing how approximate it is.

Wisdom from the religious perspective involves a kind of humility. It's about accepting one's own limitations and the limitations of human knowledge in general. Truths belong to the spiritual realm.

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.
