John 3:5 is a famous verse. We've all read it: "Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God." But "born of water"? What does that mean?
Some say it is an allusion to physical birth, where a water bag breaks just before a baby is born. But wouldn't this be like saying you must be born to be born again? Hence Nicodemus' famous question, "How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" Because those who hear John 3:5 have already gone through physical birth, and yet it continues to be a requirement for entry into the Kingdom of God.
Let us instead allow the bible to interpret the bible to get an accurate understanding of John 3:5. In Psalms 51:7 we read:
"Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow."
Wash with what? Physical water? Water cannot remove sin, can it? In Ephesians 5:25-26 we read:
"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; That He might sanctify and cleanse it (the church) with the washing of water by the word."
The regular immersing of oneself in God's word has a cleansing effect on the reader. In James 1:23-25 we read:
"For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."
"Except a man be born of [God's Word] and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God."
