Another Strong Reason Why Islam Fits The Bill
I've always read past this passage hurriedly, because I could not for the life of me imagine the utter stupidity of many kings, let alone one king, who would be foolhardy enough to pick a fight with the Almighty in pitched battle. The passage seemed all too contrived, too improbable to even contemplate.
Then over the years I came to learn that that is not the case at all. Islam has its own Eschatological scenario that closely mimics the one in the bible. And it has its own cast of characters too: a guy named the Mahdi who the entire Islamic world will follow in submission, a guy who they will call the christ who "returns" to earth to destroy all crosses, and a guy they label as the "antichrist" who they must do battle against.
Slowly it became clear to me that they believe that Christ Himself is (shudder) the antichrist! This explains the foolhardiness. And this also explains the repeated description of shame in their eventual but assured defeat: the realization that they they were battling the God whom they thought they were serving.
