Are camgirls a net benefit or harm to society?

Pay-per-minute or tip-based erotic cam shows have become a multi-billion dollar industry in the last 20 years with over 60,000 independent or studio models (note: about 30% are men/trans) currently employed worldwide. While top models make $25,000 or more per month, most make less than $1,000 depending on hours and their relative sex appeal (meritocracy). The camgirl business is also up 25% with many people forced home due to Covid restrictions and having time, and other things, on their hands.

While there are financial and safety benefits for cam models, the work is emotionally demanding and has downsides for both the models and society at large. What do you think?

The cam industry is...

While I see no benefit, I do not have the right to intervene in free commerce between willing parties. And while I do believe that the virtual peep shows have been over hyped by the worst actors of non free speech social media, they have the same rights in an open public forum that myself and others should have but are often deprived of. Because of this, opposing views that explain the potentially negative effects are under represented. That I do have a problem with.

I won't be told what to do with my body ,life and freedoms and I have no right to tell others what to do with their's.

Net Harm. I am all for freedom to do what you want, but online porn sets up people for an unrealistic view of human sexuality.

People should make their own decisions and be accountable for their own actions. Camgirls, booze, cigarettes, sugar, lethargy, overeating, all of these things are bad for you if they are abused. Choose to be in balance or choose to binge. Your choice.

Would I want my daughter or anyone in my family to be a camgirl? NO

Definitely harmful, it has completely devalued sex and individual worth. It’s harmful for men as instant gratification has lowered willingness to work hard and strive to be better in life as well has lowered their overall view of women in general, but most of all promiscuity and excessive openness with ones body has been devastatingly harmful for women. It has destroyed their ability to maintain long lasting intimate relationships and has made them shallow and vain, constantly concerned with getting attention and approval in the most superficial ways, and willing to do anything and lessen themselves to any level to get it. Western culture has been ruined by this sort of behavior and, to be honest, I am no longer willing to date in this culture. If I ever find a wife it will be from another area of the world but likely never will, as it has become apparent that through technology the pathologies of the West are rapidly spreading and I see no benefit in partaking.

1

The problem for men is it distracts from seeking the real thing in relationships, it gives them false ideas about women and visa versa, the other problem for women is the lack of awareness the impact will have on their reputation .

We have bigger fish to fry, but yes, this is harmful

What are the big fish you'd like us to focus more on? Happy to incorporate them 🙂

@Admin I’d like to see what members think about the harm reduction approach to addiction.

Okay. Who’s idea was it to post this question. Now you’ve gone and done it....
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. @JesusSonOfGod Matthew 5:27-30.
By the end of all this discussion we may have a bunch of eyeballs and right hands on the floor!

Gonna look like a slasher movie in here

I thibk they're totally useless people running a scam. Their simps don't seem to know that they can watch so much more on stes like xvideos, and those videos are all free.

I've been thinking about this one for a bit before commenting... I consider myself conservative and, recognizing that I probably have a degree of ignorance on the subject (I actually don't know everything about everything 🙂 ), my gut says net harm.

The other issue I read about in other people's comments is whether it should be legal. Regarding civil liberties, I believe my views are classical libertarian. There are some measures in place to protect kids, and I do think reasonable measures should be taken, but realistically, that responsibility falls to parents above anyone else.

@RobBlair mentioned a link between obsessive interest in porn and divorce and @WorldSigh mentioned addiction, which is absolutely a relevant issue that does harm society. I think both of these are connected, because the relationship issues that lead to said divorces will often involve addiction. There are people with a predisposition toward addiction (whether by nature or nurture), and these people often seek alternatives if they are having difficulty getting their fix in their primary addiction, so banning things isn't necessarily a simple solution to that. Also, addicts who are not getting help and are not getting their fix either can sometimes do greater harm than addicts who are getting their fix, and they absolutely do suffer more themselves. In saying that, I'm not advocating for any kind of legal reform, I'm advocating for people to get help, which addicts are more likely to accept when faced with consequences, such as trouble with the law and/or relationship issues.

Stupid question. Any activity is acceptable if it does not harm or hamper the freedom of other individuals.

But that's the question... Does this actually cause harm to society? Does psychological harm harm or hamper freedom?

Not saying it should be banned or censored - We've had enough of that. But shouldn't individuals avoid things which prey upon our natural drives and ultimately twist them?

@Tycho Who's to say what qualifies as "twisting" natural drives. Bertrand Russel had a few things to say on that topicl
[nobelprize.org]

@pbuck0145 Meh... Don't really care what Russel had to say. We know there is sex addiction, some cases so awful men can't perform with real women.

I'm sure you've watched porn movies. How many times have you watched the same one? Twice? Three times? There always has to be new thrills. It's in some ways very similar to drugs - you develop a tolerance.

Again, I'm not saying it should be banned or anything like that. But people should be more careful about what they fill their minds with.

All commerce, even if we don't like it, is a benefit to society. All commerce creates ancillary jobs and industries. No central authority can predict all the benefits of any particular type of commerce. The equations are too complex--even for experts. So I'm not voting with the "herd" here.

1

Although I applaud the girls for being Capitalists, and I can't tell them not to get naked in front of a camera (that is their right, as long as it is legal in their state), I do think it is a net harm to society. Sex addiction is just as real as gambling, drugs, or any other addiction. These are not free sites, offering free porn. They can easily add up to a lot of money, the same as gambling addictions. It may be a way for introverts to fulfill their fantasies, but any sexual acts performed will still be one-sided and empty.

The ONLY problem I see with online porn is that it is near impossible to prevent minors/children from accessing it.
Dad hid his nudie magazines in his room - digital porn is a whole new game where children (as viewers/consumers - NOT as victims) are concerned. Child victims of sex industry and sex abuse is a whole different matter.

Well, good webcam sites are password protected, and the one I was on lets the ladies choose the age range, genders, etc that they want to cater to (mine was 21+).
Actually, aren't porn sites password protected too? My password is saved on the app, so I don't know if you can access porn without it...
But I guess, thinking about it, you can find porn elsewhere on the 'net easily. Sadly, you can find anything easily on the 'net, so that could be the downside of any industry.

Only for parents that don't care

@ktpinto IMHO - since I am merely a layman and not an expert on these matters - Porn (adult content) sites and gambling sites are out there and really there is no way that I can think of that can effectively screen for underage participation. You know kids are quite clever when it comes to using digital technologies. If a reasonably clever kid want to see online porn or do a little online gambling I don't see how sites can effectively keep them out. I'm sure those sites have some "due diligence" protocols set up...kids will be kids...right?

when I was a kid, porn was available on regular magazine racks. We would occasionally look at it and laugh. It meant nothing to us as prepubescent kids. It did no harm, for the few moments we considered it prior to being sexually active(ated)

BTW I am no expert in the physiology of the human being but the pic you used looks like a man with man made tits - a tranny as they say. LOL

iThink Level 9 July 7, 2020

@scotirishviet there is body mass there that looks masculine to me. Shoulders, clavicle bones, biceps, thickness of the abdomen...but like I said. I am no expert.

BTW you do know that transsexuals get work done on their rumps, waists, face, legs...body sculpting I think they call it - if they have the money to spend they can pretty much have their entire body reshaped to look feminine.
Then add the HRT - voila you got an XY chromosome person (usually with penis and testes intact) who looks superficially top to bottom like an XX chromosome person.

@scotirishviet they often get reconstruction of their facial bone structure. Reshape the jaw, the chin, the nose and brow...seriously there are some you would NEVER guess until they show their penis...its, freaky.
I have seen some women with some manly looking hands and men with long delicate looking fingers - Same with feet.

I was a webcam girl for a few years to make some extra money. All it basically is is a sales job, with all the annoyances that come with it.

you bio is intriguing...I look forward to your posts and comments / opinions on things

@iThink That's very of you to say. Thank you. 🙂

@scotirishviet her bio says she is a published author and she looks for intellectual conversation...I am very interested in such. Is there something wrong about that? ha! If you have read very many of my posts and comments you will see that I am a bit of a frustrated writer myself (unpublished but with a passion for the well written essay and composition and book - fiction and non-fiction) and that I tend to overthink - intellectualize all the time. I also hope that my sense of humor comes through. BTW I'm an Irishman myself - American born but very Irish. My grandfather immigrated from Ireland in late 19th century.

@iThink I read your message and did not think "thirsty" at all.
@Scotirishviet I appreciate you being protective, but there really was no need for that. With the types of jobs I've had - and have - I have a "thirsty" radar, and that didn't even register as such. Thanks again! 🙂

When you make people into sex objects the culture will suffer in many ways. This is the reason for Morals from many religions thru the centuries. The total freedom ruse is a cop out. Tribalism was like we are getting now, and morality was the reason for civilization and what it was built upon. It's easy to understand why the Marxist are against morality as they are always for anarchy.

Harmless titillation. But a warning notice might be a good idea.
"This is a money making endeavor. For fun only. They are not in love with you." !

The warning can be posted... it will be ignored though.
Speaking from experience, they fall for you, they want your address so they can send you gifts (pro tip: have an amazon wish list with the address hidden), they want to take you on dates, they get jealous... you have to be a very good salesperson and believable actress to balance these things.

@ktpinto OK .... 🙂 taking your advice I'll give it ago. 🙂 wish me luck

They're a definite benefit to society in that they provide women with few skills a means of making income that assists society. They're a benefit to the rest of society in the same way most of the sex industry is. The drive for intercourse can, of course, leads to lots of positives...but it's a drive we don't get the choice not to have. The sex industry gives men, in particular, and also presumably women, more of an alternative option to getting into relationships they don't wish to have.

Furthermore, the sex drive in general, even for loving couples, sometimes leaves someone with un-fullfilled cravings and the sex industry can fulfull those cravings in the way too. The sex industry is one of those inventions by humanity that, as they often to, were designed to make up for Mother Nature's flaws in our design. As usual, if it feels good and it doesn't seem to be hurting anybody, it's probably a good thing.

Now prostitution, on the other hand...whether that causes more harm or benefits is a lot more debatable. It's a much riskier endeavor, but strip clubs and camgirls are pretty much a harmless way of dealing with things.

0

It provides a relief valve. But there is no in the champagne room at the strip club.... So I have been told.

0

This shit is a Cancer to society, obviously. It's a testament to how powerful the spells are that so much moral depravity passes for being morally progressive.

It has both beneficial and detrimental affects to society, all of which I am sure are covered by other comments. I believe in freedom and liberty, so I don't believe in banning or restricting this practice. I think that change should begin through cultural values, in society and the family.

Most of the time I like camgirls, I think the phenomenon is harmless and entertaining. Apart from the fact that at a camgirl is a waste of time because it leads to no real personal benefit, I am not harmed by the activities of a camgirl. I don't know what is to be regarded as an 'interest of society'. Why would an abstraction called 'society' be an agent with interests that can be harmed? Only Gods Will can represent the collective interest of humans. I know God dislikes perversion and of course showing off sexuality outside marriage is perverse. These girls are better off, happier and living a more fulfilling life, if they obey God and find some other way to earn money or amuse people.

@MaskedRiderChris The notion that sex is only for procreation is a fallacy. That's one of its purposes, of course, but the other is for enjoyment within the bounds of a monogamous relationship, where it has an amazing ability to draw a couple together, forge a deep attachment, and even heal emotional wounds (make up sex, anyone?).

Sex most definitely has a God-given purpose for those who can't have children, or who choose to remain childless.

@Thaw The human sex drive is biological, but the purpose is for more than procreation. For most animals your statement is true (I've heard dolphins sometimes have sex just for pleasure), but with humans, the purpose of sex is multifaceted. We're more than biological machines pre-programmed for certain functions.

@Thaw Nope...not going to buy that. We'll disagree on that indefinitely.

@coalburned I'm curious, what information are you using to draw the conclusion that the biological drive to have sex isn't purely to encourage procreation?

Reading through many comments that , while obviously mean well . Are seriously considering taken away someone's agency to freely make a living & fill a seemingly large demand..
If cams girls succed in satisfying just one potential sexual abuser. Because he's slapped himself silly , so can't be botherd to harm anyone now. They deserve a yay..
As far as " what if she's only 12 ". .Where are her parent's. ? Plus if it's off the kids own free will . She was obviously going to be a slut anyway.
