Typically you see compensators on somewhat small caliber pistols and rifles designed for precision and competitive shooting. Muzzle brakes are fairly common on large caliber long range tactical rifles such as the Barrett M82.

Remember Manaport Arms of Mount Clemens, Michigan? They turned the pistol's barrel into a compensator with a pair of laser cuts into the top on either side of the front sight blade. That was the beginning of the competition between breaks and compensators.
