If I enter a store expecting to quickly obtain something, and it is locked up 'cause they won't do anything to stop pilfering (unlike the Oberlin college town bakery dude ) , I'm leaving and buying from Amazon.

As we fail to insist on civility everywhere, the higher culture allowing things like self-service will disappear. It is up to us to stop being "nice" and to call out those without manners, and cooperate with authorities to make sure they suffer appropriate consequences. We don't do that, and we just go down the tubes to Mad Max of Thunderdome territory - and well-deserved.
