Is there or should there be a right to not be burdened with subsidizing my lazy or stupid fellow citizens?

I keep reading about the promises of Medicare for all, housing for all, reparations, a national salary for everyone, free education, Obama phones, free college for illegal immigrants,etc, etc. I know that I and every other working person will pay for these things. When and where does it end?

What does it matter?
One thing every tax-payer can be certain of, governments will squander the coffers.
Only the inventive reasons will change.

In truth there is Nothing Whatsoever in the US Constitution OR any of the Amendments that Make it Your “Responsibility”.
Further, there is Nothing that indicates the Government SHOULD be handing out money except in those programs where the Citizenry was Coerced into “Paying In”.

I am a believer that nothing is free. I disagree with subsidizing other nations when homeless Americans including veterans are living on US streets. The illegal invasion is terrifying. The dems deckaring sanctuaries should receive the releases untik they can be deported. Illegals using letal force agsinst border agents should be met eith lethal force. We should Mexico deal with their hospital care or not. They should not be allowed in at any cost! COME IN LEGALLY OR NOT ST ALL!

Some are lazy AND stupid....

A rare combination that appears to be growing in popularity.

Should we also outlaw mortgages and other loans? They appear to be paid for by other parties (banks) in the short term--though just like federal spending they are backed by a federal reserve which can print as much of its own currency as it likes. During quantitative easing following the 2008 financial crisis, they printed tens of trillions of dollars, at least ten of which are still on their balance sheet, with no resulting inflation. Taxation simply serves to help maintain the legitimacy of our currency and provide a check on runaway inequality. I suggest that you learn more about monetary policy.

Moreover, a deficit that is a reasonable fraction of GDP (which can likely be higher than it is currently) spent wisely bolsters productivity (and your prosperity) whereas austerity and surpluses historically lead to economic contractions. We're fully off the gold standard and the kind of shock that accompanied the 1970s transition is a thing of the past. No one is picking your pocket.

I suggest you read some history. England is a starting point. When they moved too far towards socialism, the economic trouble began. Margaret thatcher moved them further into a capitalist economy and things all of a sudden got better. Venezuela is also an excellent example of trying to give away too much to too many. Perhaps Greece rings a bell as well. Too many people on the govt teat spells doom for a country.

@Clammypollack Those aren't exactly apples-to-apples comparisons.

  1. The United States is unique in that not only does it have monetary sovereignty, but it prints the world's reserve currency.
  2. None of those countries have economies near the size of the US economy.
  3. With the exception of the UK, none of those countries have economies near the complexity of the US economy.
  4. None of those countries has a military nearly as powerful as the US military.
  5. None of those countries has the diplomatic influence of the US.
  6. Venezuela has a different kind of socialism than is found in developed European nations and has an oil dependent economy.

Moreover, when you look back in history, it's not enough to just look at what ideologies just happened to have currency at times of economic distress. You need to look at the economic merit of individual policies in different contexts.

You sound intelligent, well-educated and rational. What the heck are you doing here?

What's an "Obama phone?"

A cell phone proved by the government to low income families with limited internet unlimited talk and text. It's a great program for elderly handicap ect. But many get the phone give it to their kid and i see this as possible danger for the kid as well as fraud. There is as limited internet program as well because now you do all benefits applications online no going into the office. I see where that is a possibility for fraud as well

If they have nothing to offer society then euthenize. My hubby and I are both retired but we look after the granddaughter while both her parents work

Am I reading correctly that you plan to carry out an honor killing of your granddaughter if she doesn't become a productive member of society in your eyes?

No euthanasia.

Are you saying that if your grand-daughter becomes mentally ill or handicapped she should be killed? In this scenario I would have lost my father, two of my brothers and one sister, two cousins, etc. We are here to love and help each other, not kill those who are inconvenient...including fetuses.

@WilyRickWiles she has two hard working parents, she's working towards going to high school then university to be in the medical profession. Melody strives for the best, she is not coerced its come naturally.

@WilyRickWiles, @acadian what I'm saying is if a person has the capability to feed off others, rapists, paedophiles, drug dealers/users or young gang members they have nothing to offer but pain and misery. Disabled people have much to offer. Both me and hubby worked all our lives, saved for pension, give time to charity, care for granddaughter and shop for the local pensioners.......we have something to offer even though we are both disabled

It doesn't end. It's a revolving cycle of burden.

It truly is. They seek to buy votes and they get them.

It reminds me of that quote attributed to Margaret Thatcher which goes something like ‘socialism is great until you run out of other peoples money’

The United States is being Cloward-Pivened out of existence.

Brilliantly put ... write a post and raise awareness of this. The same is being done to Europe.

Thanks for a new (to me) concept. Fun! Trump has thrown a monkey wrench into the plan.

@Demere With his record-setting deficits?
