Woman finds some fucked up illegal pictures of child abuse on BF's phone. Canadian law enforcement lets the BF go because of value of privacy law that the GF somehow violated.

If this story was in the US, the BF would be arrested, charged, and sentenced to prison already.

yes and then the arguments about rights to privacy would begin in court assuming the guy can afford a good attorney. Meanwhile he would be sitting behind bars pending arraignment and trial.
