Counting ballots:
As the person in charge of a polling place on March 3rd for the California primary, WE did not count individual votes for candidates - we counted ballots cast.
In the previous two elections I worked, I counted them, then had others confirm my counts. No issues.

In this past election, I had my Asst do the count - a 30-something woman that taught elementary school (all subjects). Then I confirmed her count. Which didn't. I asked her to recount with the Technical Asst. They did. It didn't match mine, again. Now. I could have been wrong, but their second count did not match her first, OR my first and second which were the same.

Then the FOUR of us on our board (what they call the entire group working each polling place) went through the count a THIRD time.

This time I found out why their count was wrong and THIS count matched my first and second counts.

They didn't actually count the ballots, only the # of sheets used to record signatures - not the actual numbers of signatures, just the number of sheets times the number of possible entries on each.

This entire process added almost 30 minutes to our closing procedures (we were the 2nd to last polling place to report/provide our ballots in our district).

This is basic math, basic process, and two people could not get it right with just 400 ballots cast.

This is one of the dangers for the Nov election. There are three separate methods to count ballots cast and they have to match or SOMETHING is wrong: Count the # of ballots still available to be used to cast a ballot - I had to verify how many ballots we had at the beginning of voting which verified how many we were supposed to have; Count the number of signatures of people that obtained a ballot to cast; count the number of actual ballots cast. All three have to agree.

This process was repeated in 1500+ precincts in our county on election night. And 60% of californians MAIL their ballots. This Nov, they are reducing the number of voting places from 1500+ to 235. I'll be working in one of them.

Multiple this by thousands in the United States and I will tell you that we risk the worst election in our history - and it will NOT be Trump's fault, but the fault of the 50 states and over 3000 counties that host and run the elections.

Instead of hiring teachers to help run the polling place, why no accountants, at least they're used to tedious counting when they audit a stock room. Just a thought.

EVERY polling place in the United States is staffed by VOLUNTEERS. Yes, we get paid (not much) but it is usually retired people that do the work. In many places, governments allow employees to serve without penalty to their PDO so you get teachers and others from government jobs.

This election in CA all poll workers will be paid minimum wage, at least, because polls will be open for 4 days (Saturday - Tuesday) and training will take a couple days (previously 2 hrs).

DON'T HAVE POSTAL VOTES, TAKE IT FROM AUSTRALIA, AS I RECKON PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS. We had a crooked Prime Minister, and to make sure he was elected, his lot used dead people's names off graves, and when found out, he still got in, a cover-up! Then another time with POSTAL VOTES, BOXES were FOUND in a CANAL, other boxes found sitting on the BACK SEAT of a CAR, and other BOXES FOUND at the GARBAGE TIP. Then another ex PM at the time, to make sure he got through what he wanted to get through, he changed the voting on the subject to Postal Votes, and got through what most didn't want, but the elderly wouldn't vote, thinking they were making a stand against it, but fell into his trap, as he knew they'd do that! POSTAL VOTES CANT BE TRUSTED, THEY CAN GO WALK ABOUT!!! I'M ON PRESIDENT TRUMP'S SIDE ON THIS, AS WE'VE SEEN IT ALL, AND TRUMP KNOWS!!! I wish you well.

The United States has no need to look beyond our shores to see voter fraud in our elections. Will California Governor Gave-in Nuisance sending ballots to every name on the voter rolls and more people registered to vote in California than the number of adults living in the state. Who will fill out the ballots mailed to bogus voters? Ballot harvesters of course.

@FuzzyMarineVet I do know what you're saying, not needing to look beyond your shores, but you may not know that the ex PM I was talking about was the one in Australia that President Trump ended up letting him have it on their very first phone call, and so he should have. This ex PM may have been on the right, but was really a lefty, and had worked with his family for the left that not many know about, but President Trump was smart enough to pick up on this guy, who came in the back door instead of anyone voting him in, thinking he was better than anyone else, all we say over here about that phone call is, thank God for Trump who put him in his place, and now thank God we got rid of him, the crook!!
Long live America, I love America, and have since I was a child, even though I've never been there, but I do own four 58 year old American cars, and I love everything about America, maybe in a past life I had been born there, who knows, but I do have more American things than I do Australian. I wish you well.

I have been to Australia, and there's little cultural difference between our nations. There's no reason that Australia cannot be the same in the Far East that the United States of America is in the West. You have a great nation, a great people and a great heritage. Unfortunately, you too have had those who would squander all of that for the pie-in-the-sky promises of socialism. Don't let authoritarians take over your country and you will Make Australia Great Again.

Amazing... it is not that difficult to have simple voting system.Of course it excludes mail etc and only in person voting in very simple ballots.

Thank you for this account (hehe) of your experience in Ca. I always vote personally, as I represent a diminishing class of voter (not Democrat) and want to be certain to have my shrinking %of the vote counted! Now I want to weep, as I have been horrified at the .....? ummm, ....capacity of the citizens who volunteer at my voting place. Guess, if we can't get the vote right in Ca., maybe they will be as bad in counting for the Census for the Congressional apportionment. Pack the Court, pack the Congress. The Dems are so much fun to watch at question time!

It would be nice to see Trump arrest everyone involved in the mis-count
;but I doubt Trump's ability to portray himself as a lawful citizen .
