Cancel culture is a dangerous totalitarian trend-
[reason.com]

Fortunately, the United States has a First Amendment that forbids the government from punishing people for "offensive" writing and thought crimes. Our nation has a free-wheeling environment, where everyone can spout off about anything. Yet, even in this brave new social media world, the totalitarian mindset runs deep. Many Americans are eager to "cancel" people who utter verboten thoughts.

There's no agreed-upon definition of "cancel culture," but an open letter published in July in Harper's Magazine, signed by 153 writers and intellectuals, defined it as "an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty."

The very people who spawned the culture, are now devoured by it, and protest! Allen Bloom "the Closing of the American Mind". He tried to warn you!

But how much longer will we have the First Amendment? Big tech is censoring content on its various platforms (speech), governors are forbidding congregations to gather (religion), and if I was a lot smarter, I could come up with examples for press, assembly, and petition. But, since many people think that the Bill of Rights is what the government has given TO us, rather than restraints placed on government BY us, those ‘rights’ CAN AND SHOULD be taken away from mean and nasty people who say things that make them feel bad or unsafe.

Let me clarify my previous statement - At the local level the identitarian politician does not 'grant you a first amendment right' they instead decide what they deem to be offensive. This is how they get you.

SCOTUS ruled that hate speech is free speech. They also ruled that sanctuary states violate federal law - yet cities like Chicago still received grants for police as a part of #operationlegend which does not make sense.

The latter example - where the state still has to be bailed out by the feds - kind of makes the Feds the 'bitch' of the states who are the bad actors.

Cancel culture is both 1. extremely dangerous to political freedom; 2. tremendously annoying for the philosopher. There can be no such thing as moral certainty, since morality is not a science. It is based on consensus and it is of the essence of morality that it cannot be despotically decreed.

Unfortunately, the First Amendment, like The Constitution - is worthless. The Left has declared that the Constitution is an outdated piece of paper drafted by slave owners and will soon be deemed to be a racist document.

We have a First Amendment in name only. Ushering in Identity Politicians who criminalized free speech when they made it a hate crime to criticize them did away with free speech.

True, which is why we need to turn the tables on the leftists and start pointing the finger at them like they do to us.
