Will big labor give the boot to police unions? Be skeptical...
[reason.com]

Since they grew into power in the second half of the 20th century, police unions have become a dominant force in politics, pushing for increased government spending on law enforcement and for the implementation of workplace policies that protect individual officers from the consequences of their misconduct.

The national protests sparked by the police killing of George Floyd have caused more and more people to question of the wisdom of allowing police officers to form unions in the first place. After all, police unions don't just negotiate wages and represent officers in disciplinary hearings; they push for union contracts that protect officers from the consequences of bad behavior that would get any other class of worker fired or even thrown in prison. One study shows that while police unions may raise the wages of officers, they don't actually result in better policing or safer neighborhoods.

I don't know about the whole country, but the police unions have been rumbling for years in NYC. The men on the ground lean right, but the union leans left. They understand that politicians have to be bought, and apparently it's easier to buy democrats, but when you have situations where Mayor Bubblehead DiBlasio and The Vampire Chuck Schumer are denigrating police while pocketing tons of their union dues, the actual police officers do not like it.
Will the members abandon the unions, though? I doubt it. They have very sweet contracts. Will cities grab this opportunity to renege on those contracts by disbanding the police departments? Maybe. Will that negate their contracted debts? Absolutely not.
Still, the sweetheart retirement deals city services have are bankrupting big cities. There will be a strong will to end these service organizations to wipe the slate clean and start again. If the cities devolve into chaos, the politicians won't care. They have guns.
