reminds me of watching the Mercury and Gemini flights.

People ask why me it is important to send a few men into space.

I ask why was it important to send Columbus and a hundred-odd sailors to find a new way to China?

It changed the world. Not immediately. The precolumbian world was fixated on a trickle of luxury goods from the Indies and Orient. The postcolumbian world found new resources, new sources of wealth, and room to grow.

Columbus and his three rickety ships transformed the world. The new space race may do so as well.

It was a beautiful thing, wasn't it?
